The Great Pretender - "Gene Pitney" - Year Song Released 1969

Whoa-oh, yes Im the great pretender
Pretending that Im doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
Im lonely but no one can tell

Whoa-oh,, yes Im the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
Ive played the game but to my real shame
You,ve left me to dream all alone

Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can conceal

Whoa-oh,Yes Im the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what Im not, you see
Im wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that youre still around

Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can conceal

Whoa-oh,Yes Im the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what Im not, you see
Im wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that youre still around

  • I worked with Gene as support artist in the early 70s, in one of his concerts at a place called "The Golden Garter" in Whythenshaw Manchestr England, he was the most lovely man, a few weeks later I worked with Roy Orbison at the same venue, them were the days of Great Cabaret artists and music. God Bless Them.

  • another great one, thanks.

  • @footyone1 me too i was booked to see him at Buxton i was devastated.

  • muy buena version en la voz de pitney

  • The Platters version the original is still the best the rest are so impressed of the song they had to cover it.

  • no one can beat Gene especially in terms of voice

  • this a great song by gene , my favourite version of this song

  • this is the best version of this song , as a gene pitney fan this is the one and only ,,, thanks for posting .

  • Having listened to all the versions I think Gene's is the best. The song so suited his strong unique voice. I was a fan from a very young age and first managed to see him when I was 18 and went to various venues in the East Mdlands and been looking forward to seeing him at Buxton on that final tour. Another song where he used the power of his voice to the fulll was 'street called hope' it really should have done better in the UK sports than it did.

  • This is my favourite singer of this song. Absolutely brilliant!.

Roy Orbison and Freddie Mercury are pretty close with their versions.

  • We're doing a documentary on Buck Ram and are looking for the best recordings of "The Great Pretender." This is one of them. Roy Clarke does the funniest/best. There are some really bad ones out there.
