Quick playalong - I'd need a few hours warm up to get comfortable with this one - hope it gives you a hint at what a monster technique Jamerson had by '69.
I'm guessing this was a Jamerson warm-up or similar that a producer said he wanted to use - it's not the usual wonderful Jamerson improv. Lots of discussion on the net about how hard Jamerson played - my view is he played with a lot of dynamics for most of the time - so hard and soft to taste if you will, but the really fast stuff just had to be played softer (and yes, softer than my feeble attempt - I'm not used to trying lines like this). The preamp, limiter, desk, level on tape etc all affect the final sound, so the amount of dynamics we get to hear are VERY variable from track to track. Still, it's all genius with JJ, so you can't go wrong.

  • BTW thanks for the tribs to Jamerson. I'm really digging your workout.

  • I was reading that Jamerson's action was adjusted pretty high, with flatwounds. I think is was Bass mag. Good bread and butter article.

  • Wow! Just like JJ with one finger and the pick guard. A great tribute!

  • love that you keep it traditional when representing jamerson and the one finger technique. very impressive. great feel.

  • Groovier and groovier, you just get better and better!

    I get cramps watching it.

  • Hi there, are you using Labella's or Rotosound 77's on this? How do you compare the two? Just wondering for my new Fender P bass? Also any chance of a quick vid or some details on your rubber string damper that you made, would be really interested in how you made it as you've really nailed that Jamerson tone!

BTW, keep up the vid's..really inspired me as a bassplayer to get more into some Jamerson tunes...find myself just using my index finger more and more now too, really makes a difference!

  • Nice bassline, Nice bass tone, and most of all nicely played

  • Wow
