Using a Make Controller, RFID reader, electric door strike, and a power over ethernet module to create an access system that can allow access based on authorization granted by a webserver. This allows coworking and maker shop facilities to control access by user and date and time. Future extensions will allow machine access to those that have been trained for a given machine, and will correctly bill users for time on machines that have significant run-time costs.

  • I heard the Make Controller 2.0s were extremely unreliable. Did you have any trouble getting your's working?

  • @catskul No, it actually surprised me, after all the bad stuff I had heard online. We've had one of these in place with very simple code running for several weeks with absolutely no issues. I have to admit that there are some quirky things I found while programming it that I didn't like - problems I could not see a reason for, but by restructering my code they went away - but beyond that, I'm pretty impressed with how the controller is holding up.

  • where did you get the parts from and how much and what programs did you use to control it and program the chip thingy

  • @joshthewacko Make Controller and I/O board from solarbotics, RFID reader from parallax, Power over ethernet supply from digikey, HES 5000 series electric strike. I used MCBuilder from makingthings to compile and program the chip. The server is running a simple ruby server that connects to someone else's membership management software.

  • Installed this into the coworking space last week. First change request: Remove the beeper! ;-P
