I have 2 AC/battery opreated smoke alarms here in my unit, and earlier this year, I asked my step father to change the batteries in them, my alarms use standard 9 volt batteries. I turned off the power to the lights and smoke detectors at the circuit breaker and my step dad completely removed the alarms from their braket, they obiously can be removed in order to change the batteries. I suspect this varies from Alarm to Alarm.

yeah it depends current newer models have anti theft devices installed them, they provide a small level of theft protection by locking the unit into the base & preventing unit\battery theft
