Malky Higgins passed away Monday July 25th 2011. To commemorate his memory, I have put together this little collage of photos taken in New Orleans during our jazz festival visits for the four years 1986-1989. You will see and hear how Malky enjoyed himself and how he helped everyone else do the same, in the process!
The sound track "Just A Little While To Stay Here" comes from a recording made at Fritzel's bar on Bourbon St in April 1988, during one of our annual trips for the Jazz & Heritage Festival. Ralph Cole, bless his heart, had his ghetto blaster with him and recorded us in the tumultuous atmosphere of Fritzel's . I cleaned it up as best as I could and what you hear here is as good as it can be within the limitations of the recording. Fritzel's was jammed with our Canadian party, locals and other fans. The Toronto Jazzmakers were well oiled by the time we played this tune. "Dutch" the popular German proprietor had been his usual liberal self with his special schnapps and free beers, to make the band even more joyful! We had arrived by plane from Toronto that day and we were raring to go, as you can hear!
The Jazzmakers on the recording - the 1988 trip - were Malcolm Higgins -trumpet; Bobbie Talbot - reeds; Brian Towers - trombone/ldr; Dennis Elder - drums; Jack King - banjo; Brian Graville - piano and Janet Shaw - baritone sax. Rainer Hunck missed 1988 so Jan played capable "two beat" on her baritone sax, helping to anchor the rhythm section.
R.I.P. Malky but not too peaceful we hope!
