October 25, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Virgil Fox. It gives me great pleasure to post several of the pieces I was privileged to study with him over the 10 years I spent as his student. In the spirit of 'honoring the master', I submit these performances in a style similar to his. They contain the essence of what he taught me about music in general and organ playing in particular.

In my youth I was often dismissively accused of being a "carbon copy" of Fox, but the fact is that I sought to study with him because I identified with his approach more than others that were accessible to me. Each of us "gets" music a little differently and that diversity keeps life interesting.

I owe Virgil Fox much. He turned my early interest in the organ into a passion for playing them and his touring organ sowed the seed for the eventual founding of Marshall & Ogletree. We all have heroes and he is certainly one of mine. Go Virgil!

  • I watch Doug and he had to work for this piece...wow! Wonderful! I enjoy anything this man plays for some reason. Thank you Doug!

  • Love this. My most popular uploaded video is a Audio version of Virgil playing the Wanamaker organ and his arrangement of Bach's COME SWEET DEATH. Over 39.00 views and about 250 comments

  • Really solid playing, right up until the end........quirky ending! Gigout didn't write it that way, and it wasn't meant to be played that way!!

  • COMPLETE Virgil interpretation! Loves it

  • The Gigout Toccata is always fun to play, I have to say the electronic sounds pretty good to Moi, it's very good. Those small details like 'playing the room' make the warhorses light up.

  • FANTASTIC!!!! Virgil would be proud indeed. I especially appreciate the registration throughout the piece . . build . . build . . . then hammer it. You've even got Virgil's Riverside release at the end. Well done!!!
