The French version of "Träumen von der Südsee" was recorded by Tino Rossi as "Le bateau des îles" (The ship sailing 'round the islands) in 1938. It was released as B-side to his hit "J'attendrai". The orchestration & interpretation is very different from the German version you will find in my channel.

About the video :
Star of the video is the legendary French ocean liner "Normandie". It shows footage of the vessel sailing the ocean as well as pictures of its legendary interiors. Still considered the most beautiful and elegant liner to ever cross the Atlantic, the "Normandie" was destroyed by fire in New York in 1942 while being converted to carry troops to Europe (She had been re-named USS "Lafayette"). She capsized and lay in the docks of New York harbor. She was righted but was considered a total loss. She was scrapped in 1946. It was a sad ending for a ship that during its short lifetime had carried politicians, scientists, socialites and stars of stage and screen such as Marlene Dietrich, Fred Astaire, James Stewart...

  • A splendid recording - and I very much like the photos you have posted and the story of the Normandie with it. A pleasure to listen to and watch - thanks

  • Wonderful recording. Thank you Leo... Bateau/Traumen had, I suspect, the same effect in '38 as 'A Slow Boat To China' in the sixties... If that 'get away' feeling does not persist any more, I suggest it is because with the Internet and other developments, there is no place to get away to...Cheers!

  • Ich habe die Platte irgendwo, mal schauen ob ich sie finde...
