A penumbral lunar eclipse that took place on February 9, 2009, the first of four penumbral lunar eclipses in 2009.
Many societies throughout history have been disturbed by or outright afraid of both solar and lunar eclipses. While each story is different, there are a few common themes.
One of them is that of some sort of monster is eating the sun or moon. For example, the Cherokee believed a frog was swallowing the moon. The Inca thought it was either a serpant or a puma. The Chinese were convinced it was a dragon. Natives on the Gold Coast thought that the solar cat would eat the Moon when she got lost and wandered onto it's path. In India it is a demon named Rahu who stole the food of Immortality from the Gods and now lies in wait to eat either the moon or sun, whichever one comes closest because they witnessed his crime and told Vishnu about it.
The other commonality amongst these stories is that people attempt to scare off the monster by making noise. In fact, as recently as the 19th century, the Chinese Navy is said to have fired it's cannons in an attempt to chase away the dragon during a lunar eclipse. - rigga77
