The entire animation is created only using a 4 key-frame walk cycle. Physics takes care of the rest. Instead of direct control, the animation keys drive the "intention" of the spider. i.e. The spider's joints apply forces in an attempt to achieve the walk, but is subject to physical forces and constraints. I made this video while testing the physx SDK's 6dof joint within a 3dsmax plugin. Music by S. Melax.

  • but spiders have 8 legs?

  • The joints are very jerky with PhysX. I just built my first car with 6dof joints in/for shockwave and it's really disappointing. I think I'm better off using raycasting to simulate suspension and animate the wheels. It's very disenchanting.

  • Looks like Bamzooki

  • so you didn't use that biped figure?

  • Nice one I'm actually quite impressed with this as I have been thinking about using physics based animation in my next video game project.

Although some people have faulted the apperance of the spiders walk, and yes I agree thats not too grand. But I noticed how the legs precisely collided with the top of the log when the spider walked over it. I also like how they reacted when they collided with the blocks and ball.

Nice work for a small test

  • Very unrealistic actually. And i am not talking about 6 legs :)), but animation itself is very unrealistic, you used some very very simplified robot-looking walking cycle. Here's nice article i found about spider walking cycle if anyone interested.

  • if u knew about spiders u wud realise that they arent bugs theyre arachnids
