My grandparents had a hotel on Dalby Square there in the 50s. I was born there and have many memories of it. So glad you posted it!

It's gone completely down hill now. Still, there's defonately worse places. Palm bays nice though.

I was brought up in the area in the 50s -- initially in Approach Road Cliftonville and later in Westbrook. Haven't been anywhere near Cliftonville since the last century -- probably 1997. I came across this vid while looking for vids of Broadstairs where our grand-daughter and her parents have just arrived for a week's holiday. Brought back many happy childhood memories long submerged! Thanks

Thanks for this posting, I was looking for some pictures of that place an awful long time. I spent some 10 days there in 1983 with my school class from Brunswick, Germany and I ever thought of coming back to that place.

i live nearby there. he he. it is nice place.. very peaceful . even in summer. beautiful views
As a child in the fifties and sixties I holidayed in Cliftonville with my mum, dad and sister. We would hire a beach hut down Newgate Gap. Happy days looking for crabs on the chalk rocks and going along to the Lido to spend my pocket money on the one armed bandits! Really good memories. As an adult, I and my wife would take my parents to the New Carmel Hotel. Cliftonville has a special place in our hearts but it is sad to see how the old lady has fallen on hard times now.

Thanks for you comments Alan. The area is gradually improving a little, but has a long way to go. The local council have at least thrown some money at the area.

The derelict building at the bottom of Surrey Road, (as seen in the video) has now been refurbished following compulsory purchase by the council. Similarly, the corner building opposite the Lido has had the same treatment........ It's a start at least.

I love this video, very haunting and a beautiful tribute to your friend. Thanet in the 1970's was beautiful, I spent my childhood there. Quick question... Is Paul sitting in the deckchair? And did he know he had a heart condition prior to his early death.

Apologies for late reply. I missed this comment.
Paul did indeed know he had a serious heart condition. It was the reason why his father packed in as much of a life as possible for him. He was never going to be an adult, so for me, he was a "Peter Pan".
