Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake. The Bison Round Up on Antelope Island occurs the last week of October. Riders help to drive the island's 700 head of bison, beginning at the south end of the island to the pens on the north end. In the pens, biologists check them for health, and state wildlife managers cull some of the herd to get it down to about 500. (There are generally the same number of male and female animals each year, and they seem to calf about 200 - 250 annually.) Those that are culled are sold to breeders, ranchers and other uses. The round up starts early in the morning and lasts until the bison are in the pens. Volunteer horsemen and women pay for the opportunity to participate.
