I've had it with the stupid comments. If that's your game, just go away. Save me the trouble of deleting your garbage. For those of you want to see an example of a motherboard repair, stay tuned!

I picked this computer up from its owners to repair it and heard a rattle. Turns out the motherboard had shed its northbridge heatsink, which will cause problems.

I actually managed to *find* that stupid little clip in the case and solder it back on. This video details the fix and its effectiveness. I don't think there has been any lasting damage.

After booting Memtest, I booted a minimal version of Knoppix Live Linux on CD (as I only had 650MB CD-RW blanks handy) and that ran fine as well.

  • Hi, what's the minimum on board configuration to let a working motherboard do the "bip" bios post?I am fighting with a P4M900; first power supply broken; then fit another, worked a week then again system down and power supply broken. I changed a microprocessor's capacitor 3300 mf popped and also another 2 cap that i didn't trust; one cose to the 4 pin 12V another between expansion slot.

I don't have bip bios post and no video .Cpu fan is spinning ,that's it. Also real time battery disconnected..

  • @Ste120372 You need memory, CPU and (if not on the motherboard), a video card to let things get started. All the power supply voltages and the motherboard's own regulator circuitry have to be working.

I think the motherboard you have is toast at this point, after two PSU failures and a few blown capacitors.

  • could you help my computer has got a medion and dell computer parts but i cant work out what is wrong it wont power up

  • @webb366 No, because I really don't know what you are asking. If you have mixed and matched different parts from different computers to try and get one "working" system, you need to make sure those parts are really compatible.

  • @TheUrzur The issue here isn't the chipset performance. This computer's owner was perfectly happy with the system, and didn't have the money to buy another one. You or I certainly might want something better than this.

  • @uxwbill Thanks for the info. The computer is fixed now.

  • @uxwbill sis chipsets on 754 had terrible performance, I have one pcchips mobo with this chipset on 754 and performance with sempron and with athlon is identical. its not because of memory, not because of cpu, it is the mobo chipset thats causing this terrible performance.

  • @ComputerFreedom11 You should simplify the computer's configuration as much as possible. Remove everything other than the bare minimum required for the computer to start--expansion cards, any memory module other than the first one, extra hard drives, etc.

If the computer starts working, add things back until it stops. When it stops, you have found the bad hardware.

  • @666dailymann Is this a laptop? If it is, I suspect the power jack has broken and is now detached from the motherboard. It's a very common problem. You can find businesses that will fix it, though you may have to ship the computer to one. If you do, remove your hard drive and keep it.

  • @TheUrzur What is or is not worth repairing depends greatly upon who you are. Not everyone can just go and buy a new computer.

I disagree with your assessment of Socket 754 and SiS.
