This is one of the last scenes in the play, where Vera finally reconciles herself with the painful conscience.

  • In Schuberts song "Der Müller und der Bach" The youth sings his last lied to the brook before he throws himself into the Abyss. The song exudes weltschmertz and the phrase "Und die Engelein Schneiden Die Flügel sich ab" is aptly Cyril's return.

  • Compelling tribute to the most tragic heroine of all time, Vera Claythorne. What a lonely, erotically charged environment the haunted theater proved to be! Her rueful recollections of the murder of her young charge which were clearly in her mind's eye as she slowly expired on the noose, helplessly swaying back and forth, wishing vainly to turn back the clock, undo her evil deed and be back with her fond lover instead of hanging in ignominy for days in the most haunted of places.
