Torturing Alex with a Sony TC-630

After Mr. Alexander and his colleagues take a statement from Alex they drug him, lock him in the upper floor of the house and play Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at full volume using a Sony TC-630 on the floor below, knowing that the Ludovico treatment will cause immense pain to Alex. In order to escape the torture, Alex becomes suicidal and throws himself out of the room's window.

and yes, the fact that he sort of resembles beethoven is certainly no coincidence.

Also note how he seems powerful and diabolical at first in the closeup, but when the camera zooms back, he is dwarfed by the speakers and his low sitting position and grimaces of pain makes him seem frail and broken.

This shot alone tells more story than many of today's movies in their entire 2 hour runtime

According to the book, Alex was tortured by the music of Beethoven because the music was played during the psychiatric treatment, so he had no choice but to try to commit suicide. That is also what this particular scene presents.
