A first rate pianist, a singer, an inventive conductor, a composer of excellent jazz themes. Jelly Roll Morton will be all of those. He will as well be from time to time the selfproclaimed inventor of jazz, a nightclub manager, a poolshark and someone with a very abrasive character.
His music forms the bridge between ragtime and jazz and is still very exciting to listen to.

He recorded Sidewalk Blues with his Red Hot Peppers band in 1926.

I learned the guitar arrangement from a French guitarist, Alain Giroux, who recorded it on his lp called 'Giroux' somewhere in the late 70ies.
The first part of the arrangement is very unique as it accents the second and fourth beat and thus seems to be against the time.

I'm playing my Gréven L-00v, capo first fret, G position.

During the first 20 seconds you hear the original 1926 recording on which Jelly Roll really belts it out.

  • It's always such a pleasure to listen to you.

I bought a second-hand tab book 25 years ago (my only one at the time) with which I learned to fingerpick, but I lost it... now that you mention it, I'm sure it was by Alain Giroux, with tunes like Traveling Man, Cocaine Blues, etc. Thanks for bringing back the memory !

  • Thanks Pacha, I know about that book - it was a lesson book with mostly easy songs of which I only had some photocopies (they all turned yellow because of the oldfashioned photocopy paper - time sure flies). This song is from another lp, you can see the cover on my left side.

  • This just made my day. Can I get Jelly Roll on CD, or did he never make it? He's one of my favorites, but we've only got one record with a crack through about a half inch of the outside rim, so you can't play the 1st or 2nd songs

  • Thank you all for the kind words.

There are plenty of JRM cd's available at Amazon etc.
