  • As a former student and long time friend of Dr. Revelli I had heard the story of the Hobart band many times but this is the first time I have ever heard them. What an excellent performance by a high school band! It is no wonder that Michigan hired him in 1935 and ge went to become the greatest band conductor of his time and the Michigan Bands gained international acclaim.

  • @ChartrandR1 Yes, and perhaps of ALL time. I'm still waiting for someone at least as good to come along. Not many are inclined to study for ten years with all the wind and percussion principals of a major symphony orchestra as Revelli did at his own expense. I miss him!

  • In the days when bands really did not have much original music to do so they did second rate performances of orchestra works. I agree with one poster - interesting, however, little more. With as bad as most bands were in that time this must have sounded like the NY Phil. to most people. Bands have come so fare in such a short (historically) time.

  • @leroyosmon

Just wondering how you know how bad bands were in that time (?) Perhaps a better way to phrase it without a condescending tone might be that teaching, instrument quality and performance standards have come a long way. So has recording technology!

  • @leroyosmon (After visiting your website I see that you have written compositions for band.) I want to add that there is a LOT of 2nd and 3rd rate compositions written for band in the past several years, too. I have heard a lot of first rate college and high school bands play these noisy and uninteresting pieces that say nothing. Revelli is the man who raised the artistic standards and inspired composers like Persechetti, Gianinni, Husa, etc. Give him the credit he so well deserves.

  • amazing!!

  • You make an interesting point.

  • Actually, this is BETTER than the orchestral standard of the time!

  • This is superb- though presented in band version, the excitement and power are intact- a wonderful performance- you can tell everyone is on fire! thank you!

  • very interesting
