String Quartet "In E Minor", performed at my composition recital, 16 April 2011, University of Wisconsin - Madison.
A fusion of styles: the tonality of Ralph Vaughan Williams meets the aleatoric method of Terry Riley's "In C". Composed in modules of 2 - 4 measures, this piece allows the performers to choose how the music goes by playing each module as many times as they want before going on to the next. This results in gradually-shifting layers of sound and texture.
The performers are only given the notes; dynamics and articulations are left up to them as they respond to one another in the moment.
It's so bright and vivid!
