Sie ist Hauptstadt des Departamentos Colonia. Colonia del Sacramento ist die älteste Stadt Uruguays, ihre Altstadt wurde von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Wahrscheinlich kann man in keiner südamerikanischen Stadt außerhalb Brasiliens so viel portugiesischen Einfluss im Stadtbild sehen wie hier.
Colonia del Sacramento (formerly the Portuguese Colónia do Sacramento) is a city in southwestern Uruguay, by the Río de la Plata, facing Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is the oldest town in Uruguay and capital of the departamento of Colonia. It has a population of 21,714 .It is renowned for its historic quarter, a World Heritage Site.
Colonia del Sacramento, denominada en el medio local como Colonia, es la capital del departamento de Colonia, Uruguay. Ubicada a pocos kilómetros al sureste de la confluencia del río Uruguay y el Río de la Plata, su barrio histórico ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1995, al ilustrar la fusión exitosa de los estilos portugués, español y post-colonial. Por su proximidad con la ciudad de Buenos Aires tiene fuerte vínculo con ella. Son numerosos los viajeros que llegan y parten con ese destino, y también los habitantes de Buenos Aires que tienen propiedades en ella. Existió un proyecto para unir ambas ciudades a través de un puente binacional.
