Alberto Cairo is the head of the ICRC's orthopaedic program in Afghanistan. He's spent the past two decades in this war-ravaged nation -- far from his native Italy -- helping more than 100,000 Afghan landmine and accident victims learn to find the strength within themselves to not only walk, but also to hope, again.

In a country where the disabled are generally given pity but no rights, Cairo found a way -- through micro-loans, local employment solutions and home schooling -- to give tens of thousands of disabled Afghans a job and a sense of dignity and pride.

At TEDxRC², he shares with us his wish for overcoming the social and physical barriers the disabled face in war-torn communities across the globe.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • We are but one species, nearsighted with a grand vision. We may trip and fall, but embarking on a voyage of knowledge is not easy. Living through the emotions of others, we experience a world of empathy, we become those we do not know. The pain of another unlike ourselves is poignant. Remember, we are all we have, we are not scraps. Fight for the light.
