Not true. People keep using this lady's response as an example of what all of us are like, but that 5th grader was also from the USA and he knew his stuff. Besides, all the countries in Europe ARE actually states; a "state" is an organized political community under one government; being part of a federation is not a prerequisite for being a state. Originally, each state in the USA was indeed going to be it's own political entity only loosely bound in allegiance with it's neighbors.
