Astronaut Dr. John Mace Grunsfeld will in the week of May 10, 2009, take his fifth space flight as part of the team being sent on a dangerous mission to repair and update the Hubble Telescope. This mission is so dangerous a backup shuttle will be standing by to be launched to go to the rescue of the Hubble repair team if necessary. John Grunsfeld has repaired the Hubble so many times he is known at NASA as the Hubble Hugger. He along with other astronauts also is a climber which led to his interview at an annual meeting of the American Alpine Club. John Meek, the interviewer, served as press secretary to U.S. Sen. Robert S. Kerr (D-OK) when he was chair of the Senate Space Committee and was involved in the space program off and on through President George H.W. Bushs administration when he was public affairs advisor to a special space study headed by Vice President Dan Quayle and former Astronaut Tom Stafford, a fellow Oklahoman. John has been cited by NASA for his contributions to the nations space program over the years and was a guest at the White House for the observance of the 25th anniversary of U.S. astronauts landing on the moon.
