The Bellerophon Call is a collaborative experimental electronic composition comprising the creative resources and inspirations from both Chemical Comedown and JeffreyPlaide. Each artist contributed sequences, samples and special effects to combine in various forms in a digital multi-track environment to formulate a longer ambient structure. The Bellerophon Call combines sounds created by analogue synthesis, FM sounds and effects in a unique and non-rhythmic way. Sounds created on the SynFactory 1.15 Modular Software Synthesizer were a very fundamental ingredient to create the eerie sscsience-fiction like haunting modulations. A patch was created whereby four oscillator modules (selected to various sine and triangle combinations) were frequency modulated by a noise oscillator, creating a random stream of tones. Oscillators 1 & 3 were ring-modulated, as well as oscillators 2 & 4. The two ring-modulated outputs were fed into two delay modules to create a stereo effect. The two ring-modulated sources were also ring-modulated together and this strange output was fed to the centre channel, though subtle in volume. Variations on this single patch created all of the longer sequences heard. To start, a strange rising and falling sequence was added to an offset version of itself and then processed through a flanger - very reminiscent of a Forbidden Planet sound effect. Next was a random string-like patch producing a stream of unpredictable notes. Another sound created by the same SynFactory patch was a ringing/resonant-like patch - producing chime-like tones, but very haunting and ethereal. The next track comprised more chilly ringing random tones with a harder cutting edge. Other samples include a shimmering-like swell created by Audio Paint software, whereby the data in an image can be used to construct a sound source. FM effects were also incorporated into the mix - a fantastic modulating metallic swell-like shimmer, an industrial sounding machine-like vibration, and a suspenseful lower vibration-like effect. More SynFactory ring-modulated sharper tones were used, inlcuding the incredible eerie reverse violin track. This was created from the Random String sequence, reversed with delay and slowed down to a significant degree. The result was an incredibly realistic string track that sounds like it originated from a 1950s horror movie, with the reverse delay adding a nightmarish-like ambience. Several of the eerie reverse violin tracks were included at the conclusion of the work to change the colouration of the music, and to create a sense of impending doom or suspense. The atmosphere really is quite eerie, the kind of music to describe a desolate cityscape or abandoned planet in the Universe. To finish off, a bell-like chord signal (created by the Adobe Audition software) falls in pitch at the beginning, and more slowed down tones tail off in the distance like some surreal Cloister Bell signalling the conclusion of the work. The visuals comprise various colourised and solarised tree, fern and flower images (greatly slowed down) combined with horizontal and vertical colour logic stripes and modulations. Also featured are colourised pond water waves, images of British trees (provided by Chemical Comedown) and various forms of embossed and colourised linear and curved formations. Also interesting is the mirrored "opal-like" texture effect seen at the end of the video. The result is a very surreal and eerie landscape of music and imagery, inspired by the use of random ring-modulated virtual analogue modular synthesis and additional chime-like sequences and effects.
