NBC (60 min.)
Premiered: December 1, 1981

Last Aired: May 4, 1982
Show Category: Drama
Returning to the role that made him famous, James Garner is once again Bret Maverick. Long time Wild West gambler Maverick decides to settle down in the town of Sweetwater in the Arizona Territory at the Lazy Ace Ranch after winning the Red Ox Saloon in a poker game. Maverick's adventures don't end just because he has decided to put down roots. He must learn to co-exist with the townsfolk as the once Wild West is tamed by the arrival of civilization.

Cancelled after one year, NBC took the unusual step of rerunning episodes twice - once in the late 80s to help fill time while a writer's strike delayed new programming for the season, and again in 1994 to play off of publicity of the Mel Gibson theatrical "Maverick" movie remake.

  • Starz (Encore) has cancelled their agreement with Netflix to stream the stuff they own. The best place to see both Maverick and Bret Maverick--until such time as Warner releases them on DVD-- is on the Encore western channel. Several months ago I got a tip I could watch both there and so now I do.

  • That should be do,not Dod.Sorry.

  • @carolcoh Who are the people of the red envelopes?Dod they have the episode where Bart visits?Do you know some years ago some show got canceled and they showed reruns of this instead?

  • @carolcoh Doesn't Warner own the show? We could email them and perhaps they could release it from their website (Iike the Yellow Rose of Texas).

  • @miketheshanmanmangan ...I do remember seeing that episode. I was wondering if they would ever do that and right at the end of THAT episode...there was Brother Bart...trying to con Bret and not knowing it....lololol GREAT ending.

  • One of my favourites back in the day circa 1982. I agree with Miss Paddy Lee in that they cancelled this a little too early; should have been on for a couple of more years or so.

  • By 1980 James Garner was tired of doing Rockford and to appease NBC, agreed to do this instead,.

  • thank you . maverick id not come here to lose!

  • Ed Bruce not only co stared as the sheriff he did a great job on the theme of the 80,s remake which had the final show with both Jack kelley and James Garner reprising the 60,s Warner brothers show..

  • good spin off in the 80's!
