This footage (apart from the initial still of a leopard, observed in Chobe National Park, Botswana) was entirely taken on the night of September 8, 2010 in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. We observed this courtship ritual for some 40 minutes. The leopards seemed entirely undisturbed by the presence of our vehicle or even by the bright light that we were using to illuminate them. Interestingly, it was always the female who was attempting to initiate the mating. However her advances were consistently rebuffed. Ultimately she gave up and the two of them disappeared in pursuit of a passing impala.
Kudus to our guide, Aubrey Mbewe of Norman Carr Safaris, for realizing that the distance between two of the pairs of points of reflecting light that we could initially see during the night could not correspond to the interocular separation of impala eyes and had to be the eyes of some other animals.
