heres what i think.at the point where tetsuros mom dies in the tv series,is where the split timeline forms,because if count mecha died early in the tv show,he couldnt exsit in the movie.the rest is all japaness animie logic :)

The timeline for GE 999: At 113 episodes, GE 999 ran so long that the first movie version came out in 1979, before the T.V. series ended, which probably spoiled the outcome of the T.V. series. Then "Adieu GE 999" came out in 1981, where the story picked up two years after the first movie left off.

Update: Back in September 09, 2009 a new short film called "Galaxy Express 999: Beyond the Diamond Ring" was released in Japan. I am told this one is 16 minutes and 39 seconds long, which is about 999 seconds. As of now, there is no word from the Toei Video as to if it will ever be released here in the United States.

And then GE 999 made its return with "Eternal Fantasy" - continuation(?) of either the T.V. series or the two previous movie versions. Which leaves the 'prequel" OAVs + cameo appearances for both Queen Emeraldas and CPT Harlock.

This is what is known in literary circles as "not giving a damn." GE 999's timeline makes it flatly impossible, and Leiji Matsumoto doesn't give a damn.
