Short vid I made of a AG brewday. Not very good for instructional purposes, but feel free to leave comments or ask questions...

  • @djdevelope32 jeah, i never made starters or hydrated with dry yeast. i always thought it was unnecessary, but maybe that helps increase the yeast viability to reduce off flavors. i dont know, but making a starter is easy and ive noticed really solid results. check for that peachy aroma next time if you use us-05...

  • @zodiak3000 Interesting. I ferment at 66. I've never had a "peach" flavor. I wonder what the difference is? I only use this yeast on extremely hoppy beers. Maybe I just haven't noticed it. I still make starters with SafAle. I hydrate it, then pitch it into the starter.

  • @djdevelope32 Ive been temp controlling fermentation for awhile. all my beers were and still are fermented lower (62) to avoid any esters. not sure what happened, but i had about 3 batches in a row after this that all had the same aroma with different dry hops every time. PEACH. i couldnt stand it. decided to go back to making starters with wlp001 and have had no peach or ester issues. i also notice a much cleaner and well rounded result with the final product. dry yeast has a lot of dead cells

  • @zodiak3000 You can get that at higher fermentation temps. I have a recipe that calls for centennial, mt hood, and amarillo. Dry hopped with citra. The esters work well with it. This IPA has a very "citrusy" aroma.

  • @djdevelope32 It won Best of Show in the IPA category earlier this year in the BJCP HomeBrewTalk competition. I really liked the turnout, but ive moved back to making starters with WLP001. I was getting way too much peachy and unwanted fruity esters from the US-05....

  • I love SafAle yeast. Cheap and works like a champ. How did this turn out?

  • @smcbrewingco Buckets worked great for about 10 batches...than I got an infection, Im back to carboys and I hate using them (i have a 3 year old daughter as well), but my beers are coming out fantastic. I also ditched the dry yeast because I was getting strong peachy notes in my flavor/aroma. yup, back to using liquid yeast with massive starters. my beers have been so spot on lately. Although, this particular beer did win best of show in the IPA category for the HBT competition earlier this year

  • Glad to see someone else who uses buckets to ferment. I've had good success with them and they're much safer with a little kid running around the house. Also been using dry yeast lately as well, works great!
