The real title of this song is Červená sukýnka, The Red Skirt. It became popular in the U.S., thanks to Frankie Yankovic, just as the Cold War was beginning. Anything red was looked upon with suspicion, so Maestro Yankovic changed the text and title and it became The Blue Skirt Waltz. The original Czech text tells of a girl who has a beautiful red skirt just like her mother used to wear years ago. The song is still popular with Czechs and Czech-Americans. The accordionist/vocalist is Chicago musician Mazurka Wojciechowska, who plays regularly at the largest Czech restaurant (and one of the oldest) in the nation, Klas in Cicero, IL, established in 1922.
I'm sorry that Mazurka can't hear my applause for her wonderful rendition of Červená sukýnka, I only wish that I knew the words.
It was this song (Frankie Yankovic's 78 RPM record of the Blue Skirt Waltz) that got me interested in accordion music from the very first time that I heard it.
Thank you so much for posting this lovely song.
