Vaka Te Au O Tonga arrived back in Rarotonga at around 3pm on the 19/08/2008. A large crowd gathered to welcome the crew who had travelled to the Pacific Festival of Arts in Amercian Samoa. The Vaka was severely damaged in 2005 during one of the many cyclones that hit Rarotonga. The Cook Island Voyaging Society rebuilt the Vaka over the years. More details about the latest voyage and future plans can be found on their website http://www.voyaging.co.ck

  • According to Rarotongan tradition after he arrived in Rarotonga which he named after the name of his malae ( marae ) in sampa he erected and named alot of the marae's and places in Rarotonga. He discovered Rarotonga/Tumu-Te-Varovaro. Rarotongan Makea royal family trace descent through Karika.
