Popular bengali patriotic song written by Dwijendralal Roy in the late 19th century. Played a big part in the Indian freedom struggle and also in the 1971 freedom movement of East Bengal. Continues to be extremely popular in Bengal even today.
MS Subbulakshmi is not just the foremost proponent of Carnatic classical music but also embodies the best in human values. She also has a great history going back to Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and other leaders of the freedom struggle. Hence it is a treat to see such a historic song sung by her.

  • I almost had tears of nostalgia after listening to this song because I had sung this song several times while at school, especially as part of Independence Day celebrations or Republic Day celebrations. I don't remember listening to it after school. And I certainly didn't know that MSS Amma had sung this song. Listening to this song after so very many years in MSS Amma's voice is simply ethereal. Thanks for putting this song up.

  • @panchiyilsunilgeorge English ?? I guess the lyrics are in english .. Did u mean the meaning of the song ??

  • @dhandpk

    Good day

Can you please translate the words in English on your convenience if possible?

    God bless

    S. George

  • Not a single time that I did not cry when I listen to you Amma,my divine mother.

How must it feel to be loved by millions of people? There are millions who hug your picture to their hearts and cry amma, why do I get so emotional on listening to you?

  • wowwowowow!!! how corrrrect pronunciation !! greatest singer evr!!

  • Awesome, words leave me.

  • This is awesome .. MS has packed more emotion (verging on the sublime) into this song than any Bengali I have known - such was the power of MS's music.

It was so rightly said about MS - she did not sing, she was music herself. I had the opportunity to listen to her sing live during the 80s in Ernakulam (where I grew up) and then a couple of times in Delhi in the mid 90s. She embodies goddess Laskhmi in beauty and goddess Saraswathy in talent !!
