Milestone at Emory: 3000 Bone Marrow Transplants

Emory University Hospital will conduct its 3,000th bone marrow transplant on May 20, 2010. No other facility in Georgia has performed this many bone marrow or bone marrow stem cell transplants. Dr. Edmund Waller, director of Emorys Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Center, speaks about this milestone.

About Emory's Program

The Bone (Blood & Marrow) Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program at Emory Winship Cancer Institute is the oldest and largest program in Georgia. In the 30 years since the first Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) was performed in Georgia, the program's mission has been to provide curative therapy for patients with cancer using combinations of high dose chemotherapy with bone marrow or blood stem cell transplants. Our doctors are internationally known for research and treatment of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

About Dr. Edmund (Ned) Waller

Dr. Waller is Professor of Hematology-Oncology, Medicine, and Pathology at the Emory UniversitySchool of Medicine. He serves as the Director of the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Center at Emory.
