To get the end part of the 1st half of the solo to sound smoother try more bends and use the bar to pull up on the note you hit at the :36 mark. The bar gives the sound of that note a tension that you don't get with a bend and I'm positive that's how he got that strained sounding note in the studio. Heck of a job covering that solo though..it's hairy.
U nailed the feel, and almost make it you, nice overall, mr. Vai would be proud.

Thats quite a good cover, But the when the part of the solo vai makes his guitar scream, not many people should even try to cover that xD
