This song is dedicated to my friend Shas. It's only fair, I nearly stole his song title! He quoted part of the first verse on his facebook page too, which was lovely.
I don't really play the mandolin but I wrote the song on it so I had to see it through. Sadly I only know three chords on it and the C is a bit dubious.
I recorded this on a twenty foot wide strip of rough ground by a field. Not long after, I was moved on by a farmer in a truck for being off the footpath. I'm sure his truck did more damage driving down to move me on but there you go.
As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Spend A Day

Open your eyes and know the sky
Open your ears and hear the birds
Don't let the seasons get away
Don't let the river flow unheard
As it makes it way
Look for the mole that turns the earth
Watch for the oak apple's cause
All that is, surely has some worth
There's beauty in the beauty and the flaws
It can all be yours

So spend a day and spend it well
The best the worst the last who can tell
Wake up don't you know there's more than coffee here to smell
So spend a day and spend it well

There was always more than blue there in your eyes
There was always more than sadness in my song
Let your life be one long surprise
The prize of life's the living for when it's gone
It'll really be gone
Sleep beneath the moon one summer night
Bellow as loud as you can into the dark
To smile at the sun is not a crime
Give a sigh for each feeling in your heart
And a tear for those now gone

So spend a day and spend it well
The best the worst the last who can tell
Wake up don't you know there's more than coffee here to smell
So spend a day and spend it well

  • Great writing Richard, enjoyed it very much.. I think John Denver would have been right at home with this

  • Thanks Rob. John Denver's a worthy aspiration.

  • Id favourite that just on the lyrics! Really lovely words

  • I don't write much in the positive and I have to agree, the lyrics are the best bit. I can control them (unlike the voice and the mandolin!) Thanks for watching.

  • Well done, brother, and thank you.

I like the match between the lyrics, the mandolin, and your voice.
