2nd Annual Veterans Day Celebration
It was a wonderful event, celebration Veterans Day at Parkland Manor Senior Independent Living Apartment Community. Our speaker was breath taking as he spoke of his time in the U.S. Military as a Marine. Former Commissioner Bill Byrne captured the minds and hearts of everyone present along with his wife Babe Byrne. Everyone who served in the military it appeared they could identify one with the other. Among the entire guest who has come to Parkland, his story seemed to truly bring back memories to every Veteran in the building. When Ms. Frances stood after he spoke with a standing ovation, clapping after spending 21 years in the military, it appeared those who served in the military all followed. Naturally he got all of our attention, but he got every veteran in the building heart.
He touched all of our hearts when he told of the story while at combat. Although many of us have never been in the military everyone knew there was truth to his reflection in the military. If by any chance we didn't totally understand those who served by his and her actions, lead us to know this man was totally on point. He spoke well, he bonded great. You could hear a pin drop. I've never seen it so quite with so many in the packed room. I was happy because Ms. Frances Greenfield was happy, a woman who gave all of her young life in the Military. I was happy because Ms. Kit was happy a woman who spent all of her military time working in the military court system.
The letters from Cobb County Manager David Hankerson and Commissioner Lee really made the day for all who were present and received one. Thank you Judy Humphries and Millie Rogers for the hard work you did in such a short time. It was another breath taking moment when Ms. Sparkles Gibson came forth with her song and went around the room shaking hands with each Veteran you could feel the heart felt moment and appreciation. Following behind her was her sister, her identical twin Yes, they are identical and it four identical sister not just two.
Chaplain Thomas Houston, Director of the Chaplain services for the City of Atlanta Fire Department also blessed the residents at doing such a fine job as our Master of Ceremony. It's just nice to be nice and it was felt in the building. He was nice enough to share his last days before retirement on November 18, 2011 after 25 years of service to the city of Atlanta fire Department. Chairman of the Cobb County Republican Party Joe Dendy also attended and assisted with presenting the recognition letters to each Veteran attending the program.
We have been blessed many times by our supporters and partners Georgia Lung Association who catered food from Gabriel and the Atlanta Bread Company who supported with the food for the event. Other residents who assisted with food was Courtesy Officer Mary Ward Cater, Mr. & Mrs. Joe and Patricia Jobe; Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hunter; Ms. Anna Henderson the wife of Clark College deceased husband Mr. Henderson; Ms. Alice Neal who gives so much weekly to the residents with many treats; Ms. Daisy another who supports many of the events; Ms. Gladys Harris another supporters of all events.

We were bless with the heart felt exhibit prepared by Ms. Eunice Adams, Activity Coordinator. To walk into the dining hall and into the breezeway of Parkland Manor and view the exhibit of pictures of every resident who served in the Military was breath taking. The thought came to my mind, yes we have been young and now we are older and the righteous has not been forsaken nor his seed begging bread. God has been, and is on our side. The entire day totally reflected Bill Byrne reflection of military days. Our Manager Sheila Barnes blessed our guest and residents with warm comments honoring our Veterans as we are coming up to Veterans Day November 11, 2011.
Well, this was the second annual Veterans Day at Parkland Manor Senior Independent Living Community apartment. On last year former Mayor Harold smith spoke to the residents every the program appears to be getting better and better. We can never forget those who gave of themselves for our country. Thank you every one who supported again this year such a wonderful event.
