Video examining the early relationship between Henry VIII and his nephew by marriage, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Castile and Aragon, Duke of Burgundy, ruler of the Netherlands along with numerous other territories.

Charles would later turn out to be one of Katherine of Aragon's and Princess Mary's most loyal supporters. Certainly he was the most powerful, a significant factor which ensured the papacy's refusal to decree a verdict in favour for Henry during the annulment trial.

Beforehand though Charles and Henry enjoyed a fairly pleasant relationship. They met in 1520 when Charles V accepted an invitation to London. The meeting coincided a month before Henry met the French king, François I, at Ardes in an event commonly known as The Field of Cloth of Gold. Although this was supposed to symbolise peace between England and France, Henry's meeting with Charles indicated the actual route England was going to take - an alliance with the young Charles and war with France. As stated in the clip, English money for the campaigns against France ran out resulting in Henry having to withdraw from the conflict, much to his resentment. According to Eric Ives, this incident indicates 'the hollowness of Henrys pretensions to big-power status'.

  • PLVS VLTRA, Salve Carlos V!

  • He was the son of Philip I of Castile (Philip the Handsome) and Juana of Castile (Joan the Mad of Castile). His maternal grandparents were Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, whose daughter Catherine of Aragon was Queen of England and first wife of Henry VIII. His cousin was Mary I of England, who married his son Philip. His paternal grandparents were the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, whose daughter Margaret raised him.

  • Aside from this, Charles is best known for his role in opposing the Protestant Reformation and the convocation of the Council of Trent.

  • Charles' reign constitutes the pinnacle of Habsburg power, when all the family's far flung holdings were united in one hand. After his reign, the realms were split between his descendants, who received the Spanish possession and the Netherlands, and those of his younger brother, who received Austria, Bohemia and Hungary.

  • The commercial success of the voyage (first circumnavigation of the Earth), temporarily enriched Charles by the sale of its cargo of cloves and laid the foundation for the Pacific oceanic empire of Spain.

  • As the first king to reign in his own right over both Castile and Aragon following the end of the Reconquista, he is often considered as the first King of Spain. Charles I of Spain provided five ships to Ferdinand Magellan and his navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano, after the Portuguese captain was repeatedly turned down by Manuel I of Portugal.
