When they were owned by Metromedia.

Wow, this is cool to see. I recall back when Ch. 11 was an independent station in the 70's and had nothing but movies, reruns and talk shows. They did a 9 or 9:30 PM newscast for 30 minutes which was very bland and boring when compared with this effort once they became NBC's new affiliate here.

They probably would have done fine with it if they just waited a couple more years, when NBC rebounded with Cheers, etc. But then, if Metromedia kept it, it would have become a Fox O&O in 1986. NBC would probably have ended up on KMSP 9, after getting booted off their affiliate for the second time.

Metromedia did okay with it when WTCN was an indie, but once it became NBC's affiliate and took on the baggage of NBC's poor performance at the time, Metromedia just treaded water with this property until the right buyer, Gannett, came along and they were the ones who really poured cash into the operation there.

From what I've heard, this station wasn't run so well as an NBC affiliate when Metromedia still owned it. Probably the reason they decided to sell to Gannett, so they could concentrate on what they did best, running independent stations.

Whoa! That is the only news clip I've ever seen on the only real murder case in New Ulm in modern history (up until that time).

Grant Hart and Husker Du wrote & performed a song about the 2nd murder reported here.
WOW!
Thank you to whoever saved this newscast. It brings back memories. I was a newbie news cameraperson at that station. Things were so primitive then.
To help answer comments here: Gannett bought the station in 1983 and poured millions into it - including bringing in Paul Magers and Diana Pierce. When John Bachman was the anchor, our staff was only about 20-25 people. It tripled after Gannett. NewsCenter was not mandated but it was popular - like "Action News and Eyewitness News".
