Porridge tastes nothing without lots of butter, sugar and salt.

I like to put the rolled oats in first and toast them a bit before adding the water.

If it's instant oats you can use the hot water dispenser that is so prevalent in every building with a roof on it in Japan.

I usually let the oats soak up with milk in the microwave. Less energy consuming than boiling water for such a tiny dish :P
