Men in the communtiy gather nightly around one of the six fires on the Akwesasne territory of Cornwall Island to talk about the ordeal and sing traditional songs that encourage a peaceful demonstration...despite what is portrayed in the media, we, the people of Akwesasne only want peace and are taking a stand against a government whose policy it once was to save the man and kill the indian, we are still here, and we are stronger than ever! As history has shown time and time again, everything we have we had to fight for, we had to stand together as one nation and show that we are not affraid, we have come together as a community begging to be heard and our cause understood, we are peaceful, and WILL NOT STAND DOWN!

  • Mohawkmeat, you are right to a degree, we are equal, and there are some very disrespectful and hateful people in Akwesasne, but don't you think that it is better to stand up against those disrespectful people, no matter where they are from, and represent the Mohawk pple with pride? I'm sorry if I offended you, but all I was trying to do was stand up to the person who made the previous comment...I didn't litterally mean we are more civilized...I was just trying to amp up the pride a bit...

  • Um, okay, time to educate yourself! We are civilized, if not more civilized than the majority of the population, this is an ancient song that is very powerful and meaningful to us, you can't get anymore civilized than a peaceful rally...time to join us RESPECTFUL PEOPLE!!

  • Kenoronkwa Akwesasne :)

  • BundangBear, you are not alone. Research the 'trickle effect' of residential schools and that may help you to connect to your roots too. Always remember your wildest dreams are just on the other side of your worst fears and pain.

  • Halito, we have the blood from the original people, these are our lands and are being protected by us, the ones who know th truth.. get to thhe fire and listen and learn from the elders, they have alot to teach you. never look down on our own people. instead find the way to bring them to the warrior way and the pride we all share in each other. ask the original ones what they would do here today and you will find we are to unite, together we are the strongest power ever, chi pisa la chike

  • Do You need Have Mohawk Blood To Pass Through the Akwesasne Lands???? Please Respond Bless All :)

  • I disagree. We are no more civilized than any other population. To think so would be an ethnocentric POV and tends to turn into hate. Ideally we are all equal but just have different cultures, values and morals. Those differences do not make anyone more or less civilized. And I find it hard to say that we are more civilized because some of the most hateful, ignorant, and disrespectful people I have met, are from Akwesasne. No wonder we have a bad rep. These people are ruining it for us.

  • Very well said brother!

  • Some will in time, some never will. We can only show the way back to their own roots, and find their songs again.

  • You have my full support. My grandfather came from Akwesasne, but he was adopted by whites in Buffalo, when he was 6 years old. Essentially, a sort of cultural genocide. I am interested in reconnecting with my roots here, part of them, anyhow, and I am in the area now.
