High school students at Leadership Public School in San Jose returned from their holiday break to be welcomed back with smiles and hugs as part of a Free Hug Day initiative, organized by LPS San Jose's martial arts club.
"Reaching out and connecting with people IS self-defense," according to Greg Garcia, a 5th degree black belt and a faculty member at LPS San Jose. "It takes a lot of personal strength to comfort another human being. It breaks down the barriers between people."
Initially beginning with a handful of students, the initiative quickly built up in popularity, attracting over 70 volunteers who collectively inspired over 1000 hugs in one day.
