I couldn't speak fluent English for ages - you can read my story here: http://EnglishHarmony.com/improve-spoken-english.php . Now I understand that I was making the biggest mistake many foreign English speakers are guilty of. What is it? It's all about trying to use passive vocabulary when speaking! You have to understand there's by far more words you recognize than you can actually use in spoken English.

  • even though i can understand english perfectly when someone is speaking to me, but when it comes to speaking up what i have in my mind in response to someone's statement or query I get lost in translation :P this recently happened to me at a job interview and even though i had the necessary required experience for the job I just couldn't speak in front of the interviewer and explain the things i had achieved while working for my previous employer and as a result made a complete mess out of it.

  • @belialh Been in the same boat, and I know how terrible it feels. Listen, it's the typical thing for us, foreigners, to translate from our native language and prepare speech in our head before speaking it out. This causes plenty of English fluency issues, and the most prominent is a total black-out of your mind, it's when you just can't say anything despite knowing exactly what you want to say. This can be dealt with, it's not easy, but can me managed. Just check out my blog for more info!

  • Is normal the fact I'm able to understand amost everything in english when a native is speaking but didn't no how to translate it to my own language?

  • @edmilsonhora That's what any foreign English speaker should actually strive for! Seriously, you should keep both languages - English and your native one - separate and don't try to translate from one to another. Every language has its own unique structure and it's best to keep it separate in your mind to facilitate fluency.

  • How can I add more words to my active vocabulary? It is just a question, I mean now I try to do what you explain in your posts and videos everyday, and it is working very well.

I know that on the way using the words, they will become part of my active vocabulary. But I just want to know what you think?

Another question is How can I use English tv programms and series to improve my speaking?

  • @daylightmontes You should speak new words and phrases out loud when you memorize them - that's the key. Include them in longer sentences, and imagine yourself in a situation where those particular phrases would be used to create an abstract connection between those words AND a situation. As for watching TV and improving your spoken English - once again, speaking is the key. Repeat relevant phrases and expressions you noticed during a program and discuss it with yourself using those phrases!
