Recent conflicts in the Caucasus and Central Asia have taken the U.S. by surprise because this important region is often overlooked, said top U.S. experts at a panel discussion hosted by Eurasia Foundation on February 3, 2011 in Washington, D.C. Regional experts Thomas de Waal of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Fiona Hill of Brookings Institution said resolution to the protracted conflicts in the Eurasia region is possible with a concerted international push or pressure from below. The discussion was followed by a gala reception honoring three female participants in Eurasia Foundation's Bill Maynes Fellowship program -- Erkingul Karakozueva, a conflict resolution expert from Osh, Kyrgyzstan; Shahla Ismayilova, chair of a women's rights organization in Baku, Azerbaijan; and Nouneh Sarkissian, a journalist and free media advocate from Yerevan, Armenia.
