On That Day
from Dear Heather

Some people say
It's what we deserve
For sins against g-d
For crimes in the world
I wouldn't know
I'm just holding the fort
Since that day
They wounded New York
Some people say
They hate us of old
Our women unveiled
Our slaves and our gold
I wouldn't know
I'm just holding the fort
But answer me this
I won't take you to court
Did you go crazy
Or did you report
On that day
On that day
They wounded New York

  • Well it's not as eloquent as Leonard, but good try. If you only came here to stir up animosity, you're in the wrong place. Hear what you want to hear, I prefer to hear beauty, and Leonard is full of beauty. Mean and nasty people suck. Which would you rather be? Anyone can be an a-hole, it takes a real man or woman to be above that. Surely you are able to fill that destiny. Peace unto you and find love in your heart.

  • Excuuuse me, but you obviously don't get it. Leonard is not only the former Poet Laureate of Canada but his metphorical poetic genius is not always understood by some people. He's only reflecting what he's seen and heard, he's not making any accusations against anone. Why try to make an argument from it? As he said, he's JUST HOLDING THE FORT, in other words, documenting history. Your comments are way out of touch with the music.

  • What is that at 0:50

  • I got here by searching "Leonard's Outfit of the Day".

  • 11.9

  • i didn't go crazy, and i didn't report.

  • @rwbob Jew's harp is just a mispronunciation of jaw harp, you bite it in your teeth and pick it. I know I had one when I was young

  • Yesterday Norway were wounded - that peace loving nation, so sad so sad

  • That funny "boing" sound is in fact a Jew's harp, being played by Leonard himself. It's one of the oldest instruments in the world, albeit not particularly linked to Jews other than by its curious name. Nevertheless, I think it's Cohen's attempt to add a humble and personal touch to this song. A great song, I think.

  • Such a beautiful tribute.

  • ok. Chances are very good that I am supersensitive and I should just trust to the man's integrity and not even mention this but......that boing sound is reminiscent of cartoon sound effects. 2000 people died, some of them actually did bounce just like daffy duck after they jumped, ok? Wish he had left that out.
