It is a medley of two songs from the musical Hair, with lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. The song helped Simone gain pop-popularity under a new, younger audience, and became a standard in her repertoire. It has been suggested that the lyrics are in reference to the slavery and oppression of black people.

Point of Fact: This medley from "Hair" was actually written by that show's creators: James Rado, Gerome Ragni and Galt MacDermot, though Nina Simone did indeed have success with it in the late '60s.
