Archaeologist & Historian James Balme is well know for his many discoveries of ancient artefacts from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and in particular the Roman period in Britain. As well as a rare silver Roman snake bracelet James has unearthed many exciting Roman finds during his research.
Join James once again as he reveals yet another exciting discovery of Roman silver that he has made recently in the fields of Cheshire proving once again that Cheshire really does have a rich Roman past.

The coin is an important piece of evidence helping to fill in the gaps of what is known about Roman activity in the area during the 1st century.

  • Many more coins dating from 252bc

To 2ad as well as military brooches and fittings have been recovered from the site.

Also another hoard of silver Denarii of republican coins. Excavations revealed punic ditches...

  • That´s very interesting.

I did not know that the romans were in GB in the year 130 before Christ.

I always thought that the romans arrived much later in GB.

I like this kind of "close to the people" archeology.

Keep up the good work ;)

  • The Romans reached Britain with the main invasion starting in AD 43. These coins were minted in 130BC and brought into Britain either via the trade routes or by the Roman invaders as military pay.

  • I wounder how much a roman coin like you found is worth?

  • Surely the coin could have been obtained by local Celts in trade with Celts further south who inturn had received it in trade with the continent - so the find of this coin itself does not provide evidence of the Roman military actually being in the area where the coin was discovered.... one must look at the total spectrum of coins and other artefacts found... what is the date range of the other coins you have found? Have you found any military metal artefacts?? Interesting video though.

  • Roman activity in north west of the island.=boredom in the extreme! for a literate officer from Rome, the north would be like the middle of the Somalian desert! .....for the illiterate non-Roman auxillaries, the north was just a thing to plunder.

  • great job james good job..5*****
