Dan Wheldon died today, October 16, 2011, after this hard wreck at Las Vegas Motorspeedway. They ended the race after a 2-hour red flag and held a 5 lap tribute after the announcement in honor of him. He won the 2011 Indy 500 just 5 months before this day. JR Hilderand (Diziness), Pippa Mann (Hand), and Will Power (Back) also received minor injuries after this wreck and were taken to the hospital. Will Power was released with no major injury later that night. Hildebrand and Mann were admitted over night to recover. Thoughts and prayers are for other friends and family of Dan Wheldon. RIP Dan Wheldon 1978-2011

  • Randy Bernard isn't too smart. 34 cars on this 1.5 mile track, He's lucky that no one else was killed that day. If you look at Dan's onboard camera you can see the smoke from the 2 cars that started the incident and then exactly 3 seconds later Dan is flying up over a car to his death with no time to react. 14 laps is all it took for something to go horribly wrong. I hope that the Wheldon family is strongly considering a lawsuit against this guy.

  • How unpopular must Indycar be that I never heard one thing about Dan Wheldon dying in a crash until I saw this video today (Feb 29, 2012) almost 5 months later. I've even been watching fatal crash videos on youtube almost every day for the past month and never saw one video about this crash until now and never saw anything about it on any sports network anywhere on the net or on TV. And I watch sports, particularly racing, ALL THE TIME!

  • Pure ratings

  • This accident was a direct result of too many cars on the track combined with too many pay drivers who were lacking experience on a track like Las Vegas clogging up the back of the field.

That being said they never should have been racing at LVMS because it wasn't designed for safe open wheel racing.

Indycar should hire Sir Jackie Stewart as CEO and stop racing at ovals (except for Indianapolis).

  • Too many cars on a small track.

You are asking for a tragedy to happen...and it did.

  • what's crazy is that in the beginning of the crash, we were inside Dan Wheldon's car camera, it looks like it was all planned... Number 77. Dan Wheldon R.I.P.

  • Look at that tire go flying @ 8:14. A driver was killed once by that, sad.

  • putting 34 indy cars in Vegas is dumb as hell. These should be on flat tracks or road!

  • @MaTTeO742 Because you cant have that

  • Legends die young.
