Eddie Layton (October 10, 1925 -- December 26, 2004) was among this country's greatest popular music organists and the king of Yankee Stadium organists having performed for the team over the course of 30 seasons (1967-1970, 1978-2003). Eddie's unique combination of Might Wurlitzer styling's and show business pizzazz, played at the Stadium primarily on a Hammond Collonade organ, was in full force during his two separate stints with the team. He joined the Yankees as their second organist, after Toby Wright played two seasons on the Stadium's Lowrey Organ. Eddie played for the Yankees initially for four seasons and then for a second term commencing in April of 1978 through the fifth game of the 2003 World Series in October 2003, a genuine record. This recording, accompanied by pictures of Eddie and his album covers, was recorded at Yankee Stadium on a quiet Tuesday evening in July of 1988. This is notable because over the next several seasons the Yankees lessened Eddie's exceptional playing time for the more ubiquitous sounds of pre-recorded rock music and the commercials-games-news of the Stadium's Diamondvision. This is the first of several Eddie tributes posted here courtesy of YanksAtShea. Enjoy the best of the best, the marvelous Eddie Layton.
Eddie had a special sound, Yankee Stadium is not the same without his playing and I hate all the rock music played at Baseball and Hockey games, Rock is great for the NBA.
Also the current Yankee Stadium organist is OK at best, I hate that rapid playing to get the fans into it.

Eddie was my former organ teacher. Please check out my YouTube Channel, which is a tribute to him, and also to his colleague at CBS, Charlie Paul.

I met Eddie one day in the back of the LIU Paramount theater gymnasium. He was sitting at a table with a few vox humana pipes set before him. He played for the LIU Blackbirds on the Wirlitzer organ during games. The console still rose out from a pit.
