Composer HE Zhanhao
In 1991, HE Zhanhao composed this piece, inspired by the folk song 'Jasmine Flower' which is well known in the south of the Yangzi River basin. The pure and fragrant jasmine is a metaphor for unspoiled love. HE combined the contemporary fast picking with more traditional playing techniques associated with zheng. The simple and graceful melody is a representation of the Jiangnan style of music.
QU Yun
HE Zhanhao (b.1933), a professor of composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, is best known for his violin concerto 'The Butterfly Lovers' (1959) but has also written a number of works for Chinese instruments. Other representative compositions include string quartet 'Martyrs Diary', symphonic poem 'Longhua Tower' and Shaoxing opera 'Peacock Flies towards Southeast'.
