Butt Dial Leads To Arrest

Three juveniles were arrested for breaking into several cars just off the Wedington exit on Wednesday night. But it's how two of them got caught which we think you'll find interesting. "We had some vehicles get broken into. Two different locations, different people," said Corporal Rick Crisman with the Fayetteville Police Department. Now, in a usual burglary case I would more than likely be talking about how the police need your help in finding those responsible. Afterall authorities are always looking for a good lead on any case whether it be a tip from an inside source or a phone call from an eye witness. But according to Corporal Crisman, rarely -- if ever -- do they get an accidental call from the culprits themselves. "We actually received an accidental 911 call left open. So we could hear the suspects breaking into cars and talking about it as they were doing it," said Crisman. The call came from a cell phone taken in one of the break-ins. Fayetteville police traced the unfortunate butt dial to the suspects exact location. As for the two juveniles who were arrested for breaking and entering, their good fortune had come to an end. Although "Lady Luck" had one more gem up her sleeve for police. "Officers were just doing a routine drives through one of the apartment complexes and pulled up on a couple of people breaking into cars as well," said Crisman, adding,"A foot pursuit happened and we were able to catch one of the guys." So all in all it wasn't the greatest night for criminals, on the other hand, for police, it was business as usual -- literally. The cars broken into were all unlocked so a little advice from Crisman -- lock your doors and don't leave things like computers or cell phones inside.
