That just gives us more responsibility. Just because we may be the apex predator doesn't exempt us from mercy. If anything, it increases our need to be merciful to every other animal. Since man is the only animal with the gift of choice, I believe it is his responsibility to take care of the planet and all the animals therein. For the same reason we shouldn't chop down the rainforests or litter, we shouldn't brutally slaughter animals just because we can. I eat meat, but there are humane ways.

Although to you it may seem frivolous to compare a human life to that of a fish or snake, wouldn't you rather much be killed quickly then have a slow agonizing death. Yes, obviously the scenario you presented is no worse then see in this video, but if you are a human being with intelligence (which i'm not discrediting you with) why would you deliberately make something suffer if it didn't have to in the first place?
