The Jazz Icons: Buddy Rich DVD, released Sept. 26, 2006, highlights the relentless power and unparalleled artistry of the man who was known as "The World's Greatest Drummer." This 75-minute concert, taped in Holland in 1978, showcases one of the tightest big bands in history, featuring acclaimed saxophonist Steve Marcus and other members of Buddy's "Killer Force," the group he would later call "the best band I ever had." Standout performances include "Grand Concourse," "Big Swing Face," and "Channel One Suite," which climaxes in Buddy's signature drum solo.

  • I know Buddy's speed was off the charts but to say "all he does is rolls" would indicate a substance in your ears that's used to make candles. The DVD is called JazzIcons and if you are such an iconic musician, then maybe someday soon or in the next century all of america can hear the stylings of zzzFATxxTONYzzz.

  • This "old dude" would have wiped his ass with travis thank you very much.

  • I was reading some earlier comments... are you sure that the lead player isn't Tom Baker from Wisconsin. I just worked with him for two weeks and he said that he was in Buddy's band during '78. He also played with the Kenton band after Buddy's band. It really looks like Tom a lot, but I would like to know so that I could let him know about these videos. If anyone could clear that up for me, that would be great.

  • Chuck Wilson is a NY free-lance reed player, currently on tour with Liza Minnelli.

  • No way! Andy is great, but I always loved the solos and sound of Ernie Watts, Richie Cole, and Art Pepper over Andy.

  • Yeah, I just purchased this. I'm going to watch it in a couple of minutes! Looks great and sounds great as always!

  • Channel One Suite

  • This is great...what song is it?

  • The lead trumpet (second from left) is Chuck Schmidt. Grew up in St. Louis, graduated from North Texas State lab band program in 1977, toured with Stan Kenton briefly, and then with Buddy for awhile. Last known he was living in Dallas area.
