Peter King's IRA Support

The Diane Rehm Show (http://88-5.us/i4PbRR): A caller comments on Rep. Peter King's (R-NY) past support for the IRA. King's past comments revealing his support for the IRA have come under fire in light of his running of this week's House committee hearings on the radicalization of Muslim-Americans as the current head of the House's Homeland Security Committee. According to the Associated Press, in 1985 King said, "If civilians are killed in an attack on a military installation, it is certainly regrettable, but I will not morally blame the IRA for it."

The one thing that has always amazed me about "Irish-Americans" is how un-Irish they are! From Bill O' Reilly to Bill Donohue you find few of the Irish virtues, And of course jaw-dropping ignorance about Irish history. In America I often heard the view that the whole of Ireland was up in Arms against Britain("just like WE were in 1776") And a love of violence. The "Irishman" usu turns out to have a polish mother and a father who was a quarter Irish. Their nastiness is not Irish, it is American

Biggest problem for Irish-Americans is that they are clueless about Irish history & like any American about any history.

I do not defend the action the question was posed as to why even target omagh as there were no brit 'army' there and i pointed out the facts of what happened and that the target was the brit courthouse of which brit secret agents knew was being targeted fact.

In case I woke up in a parrallel universe today, I believe English is the common loanguage of Ireland. If children are graduating high school and they can barely string a coherent sentence together in written form, I fear for the educational future of Ireland when it starts paying off the 70 billion euros of bailout loans.

@monaghaned Even RIRA has apologised, and every other organisation and institution in Ireland, right across the political spectrum from CIRA and the provos to the UK government.

The fact that someone who, from their profile, appears to be an Irish national can be so profoundly ignorant about Irish history is both laughable and pitiable. I pity the soul of someone who defends the detonation of a truckbomb against a non-military target, that killed only civilians and many children

You could have easily let that one through to keeper as a Real IRA operation, and therefore not a "legitimate" Provo operation. But you didn't. You tried a shabby justification that a judicial target is legitimate.

You say MI5 knew in advance; no one denies that. RIRA called in a threat against the courthouse, people were evacuated from the courthouse and surrounding buildings. The bomb was far down the road from the courthouse, and so many people who were evacuating died.

@ Twollocks The omagh bombing was directed at the British courthouse Mi5 knew the bombing was taking place and allowed the bomb be directed into the town the public inquiry has now ended for the reason the british goverment wont own up to there blame same of the Dublin Monaghan Bombing almost 40 years ago
